| Students from Evening Classes at Upwey Old School Village Hall Some of the evening class students become involved with DPG activities and exhibitions. The DPG annual show is often their first time they exhibit their work publically and they are often surprised by the reaction they receive! Some have been potting for a number of years, some are relative newcomers. The students are encouraged to use their imaginations and do not follow a set curriculum. They are able to learn about the whole pottery process, from clay preparation to firing. Several students have become enthusiastic enough to set up their own potteries at home, but come to the classes for help with particular problems or to learn new techniques. Bill often works as a technician rather than a tutor, although he helps students climb the learning curve. The Upwey Old School, next to the Wishing Well, has a dedicated craft room. The Upwey Potters stage exhibitions and workshops during the year. There are currently six electric wheels, four kick wheels, an electric kiln and stocks of clay and numerous glazes. Both Classes usually have a waiting list of students. Bill also organizes Taster sessions on Sundays, during term times, when people who want to try potting can have a go under Bill's tuition. Students can come along to use the equipment and practice for longer than the evening classes allow. They can have access to the outdoor Raku and Soda Kilns. Members of the Dorset Pottery Group are welcome to attend, subject to space. Look at the Upwey Potters website for more details and the dates of Sunday Tasters. Contact Bill for information. |
