I concentrated on and gained a distinction in ceramics while training to teach at Stockwell College.
I continued the interest part-time while teaching and raising a family, but now I am able to devote more time to it.
I have always been interested in geology, particularly of the Devon and Dorset coasts where I was born and now live and my current work is mainly hand built from grogged stoneware, inspired by this meeting place of rock and water.
Slab pots provide a surface, which can be textured and glazed to reflect natural forms, colours and impressions of the cliffs, beaches and sea. Beach pebbles, especially those with holes in them occupied by smaller pebbles, are the starting point for my most recent purely sculptural pieces.
Being fired to 1200c means that the clay becomes vitrified (stoneware) and is frost-proof so it can be displayed out of doors.
My work has been exhibited with the Upwey Potters and the Dorset Pottery Group in Upwey, Bridport, and Highcliff Castle. Also at Charmouth Heritage Centre, Eype Church Arts Centre and various galleries in Dorset, including Mangerton Mill near Bridport.
