Phyllida died in October 2007. She will be missed by all who knew her.
She started potting as an antidote to solid domesticity when her children
were very small.
Her first teacher started her rolling clay like pastry so she did not
stay very long.
Then it was an on-off process, in a variety of adult education classes
– mainly Morley College in Lambeth and including that of Joan Biles, who
was teaching in Beaminster.
She had her own small kiln for more than 20 years and made mainly domestic
earthenware with majolica decoration.
Being naturally left-handed but made to use her right hand at school
her writing was illegible. She found the solution through a calligraphy
class, in a square nib, which led to the square brush which formed the
basis of her decoration.
Lately with friends she had been exploring the possibilities of Raku
firing, which they all found great fun, very exciting and exhausting.
