Don Hudson Potter Mugshot

'The, human soul needs actual beauty even more than bread'

D H Lawrence 'Phoenix 1936'

I feel that one should surround oneself with beautiful things and therefore I try to make things that are a pleasure to see and to hold. It is also very important to me that my pots are functional. I hope that people will derive pleasure from having them and from handling them.

I predominently throw with earthenware as it makes bright colours acheivable. Sometimes I 'paint', using bold stokes of my individually mixed coloured slips. Some biscuit fired pieces have strong line drawings added which are refined from regular life drawing sessions that I attend. I like the contrast between the different qualities of marks. The drawing extends beyond the pot so the viewer must complete the image in their mind. Luscious glazes complete the pieces giving them a pleasing warmth.

Most of the pots have a textured base which is only discovered by handling the pot. Pots must be pleasant to handle and the texture adds a bonus to the experience.

I share a workshop with another potter and between us the workshop/display area is open 7 days a week between 10am and 4pm. Visitors are welcome.
