I hand build non-functional vessels, mostly by a coil and pinch technique.
Terra sigillata or a slip made of the clay body is applied in several layers and then the pot is repeatedly burnished before bisque firing to 950.
The pieces are then smoke fired in a metal dustbin using a variety of combustable materials, adding metal oxides, salt and copper wire to produce the unique random patterns that enhance the surface.
Sometimes the pot is wrapped in a sagger of tin foil or layers of newspaper and slip, packed with organic material, oxides etc..
When cold the pots are removed from the ashes and washed in water.
The final stage is a coat of wax polish.
My inspiration comes from a lifelong love of looking at nature.
